Learning Outcomes:


After the completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Understand the fundamental concepts of computer systems, including their structure, characteristics, generations, and programming languages, as well as perform basic binary arithmetic operations.
  2. Comprehend various software concepts, including types of software and operating systems, and gain practical knowledge in DOS command operations.
  3. Recognize the importance and role of information technology in data storage and processing, and understand its key components.
  4. Analyze emerging trends in information technology such as electronic commerce, electronic data interchange, smart cards, and mobile communication.
  5. Develop proficiency in using Microsoft Windows and MS Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Unit I: Computer Fundamentals Computer Fundamentals: Block Structure of a Computer, Characteristics, Generations, Classification, Programming Languages: Classification, Machine Code, Assembly Language, Higher Level Language, Fourth Generation Languages, Number System: Bit, Byte, Binary, Decimal, Hexadecimal, Octal Systems, Conversion, Binary Arithmetic: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, Information Concepts & Processing System: Evolution, Data, Information, Knowledge, Wisdom, Elements of a Computer Processing System: Hardware, Input- Output Devices, VDU, CPU, Storage Devices, Media.

Unit II: Software Concepts Software Concepts: Type of Software, Translator, Compiler, Interpreter, Assembler, Loader, Application Software: Office Automation, Operating System: Concepts, Resource Manager, Batch Processing, Multiprogramming, Multiprocessing, Time Sharing, Real Time System, DOS: Command Interpreter, Internal & External Commands, Batch Files, File Types.

Unit III: Information Technology Basics Introduction to Information Technology, Need for Information Storage and Processing, Components, Role of Information Technology, Internet.

Unit IV: MS Windows and MS Office Introduction to Windows, Components, Customizing the Desktop, Files and Folders, Overview of MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint.
